The Pinwheel Galaxy has an apparent magnitude of 7.86 and lies at a distance of 20.9 million light years from Earth.
I took this picture shortly after the news that a supernova explosion (SN2023ixf) was being observed originating from M101. It is a type II supernova, an explosion that occurs after a massive star runs out of nuclear fuel and collapses. The brightness is likely to increase over weeks or even months before decaying away from view.
