M31 Andromeda

Although several dozen minor galaxies lie closer to our Milky Way, M31, the Andromeda galaxy is the closest large spiral galaxy to ours. The Andromeda galaxy is the brightest external galaxy visible in the Northern Hemisphere. At 2.5 million light-years, it’s the most distant thing most of us humans can see with the unaided eye. For over a century astronomers have predicted that M31 will 'collide' with the Milky Way. NASA have recently calculated this event to happen in about 4 billion years.
